Jim Collins relates Good to Great organisations to the notion of a hedgehog and their simplistic defence mechanism of rolling themselves into a ball of spikes. When Collins looked into these organisations he found that consistent simplicity was key to their business success.
Jim Collins explains the simplicity of the Hedgehog through 3 elements that should be considered by organisations (also featured in the top tips section). . .
1. Surround yourself with people who are passionate about what you’re all doing.
You can’t manufacture passion or “motivate” people to feel passionate. You can only discover what ignites your passion and the passions of those around you”.
2. Work with them to agree what you can be best in your world at, and what you can’t.
“A Hedgehog Concept is not a goal to be the best, a strategy to be the best, an intention to be the best, a plan to be the best. It is an understanding of what you can be the best at. The distinction is absolutely crucial”.
3. Work out the single most important measure of your success, and focus on improving your scores.
“The denominator can be quite subtle, sometimes even unobvious. The key is to use the question of the denominator to gain understanding and insight into your economic model”.

‘No’ is perhaps the most important, and certainly the most powerful word, in all language. Every day we find ourselves in situations where we need to say ‘No’–to people at work, at home, and in our communities because ‘No’ is the word we must use to protect ourselves and to stand up for everything and everyone that matters to us.
But as we all know, the wrong ‘No’ can also destroy what we most value by alienating and angering people. That’s why saying ‘No’ the right way is crucial. The secret to saying ‘No’ without destroying relationships lies in the art of the ‘Positive No’, a proven technique that anyone can learn.

There is no getting away from the fact that making change happen is a core competency for managers these days; however the evidence suggests that a majority of change initiatives fail, with around 60% of change programmes being unsuccessful.
Drawing upon John Kotter’s ‘8 steps for leading change’, this one day workshop focuses on equipping participants with the skills to introduce and successfully manage change to ensure the organisational objectives are met.
Before the workshop, participants will be sent a complimentary copy of Kotter’s international, best selling book, Our Iceberg is Melting. Our Iceberg is Melting is a great 45 minute read, in fable format, about the dynamics and essential steps for change.
Throughout this workshop participants will be asked to apply the content to the change initiative they will be required to lead. Vitally, they will leave the workout with their own ‘fit for purpose’ Change Plan which will enable them to accelerate engagement and effectively achieve the intended change goal(s).
