Setting goals in coaching conversations is vitally important. If done well it can release energy and motivate the coachee to generate new ideas and solutions to solve current problems.
Coaching managers can support individuals in generating goals that excite and motivate them. By creating positive emotions around these goals, individuals are more likely to evoke new ideas and novel solutions. Such positive emotions can expand the individual’s thought-action repertoire. When engaging in coaching conversations as managers, it is therefore important to consider how we go about getting people really excited about their goals.

“You can learn the skills. But how do you live the Values?”
The Organisational Development Manager ( David D’Souza) at CPP Group plc describes a solution to a perennial problem for service-based organisations.
Since 1981, we have become a leading provider of Life Assistance products and services with approximately 10 million live policies in 14 different countries.
We employ around 1,900 people and work with more than 200 Business Partners internationally.
Our primary focus is on providing customer assistance during stressful life events such as the loss or theft of a wallet, purse, mobile phone or keys, as well as providing support in the event of identity theft.
As you can imagine, our business is highly personal and relationship-driven. So it is critical that CPP staff all deliver superior performance, but more than that, they must all live and breathe CPP’s organisational Values: Specialist, Proactive, Responsive, Dependable, and Human. The way we act must reinforce everything we’re offering our customers: without that living, breathing commitment, we’d come across as a financial machine rather than a helpful friend, supporting customers through what can be a very stressful time for them.
